Plan for gaming in 2026

Video gaming is a pretty important hobby for me. But in the last few years I have had a problem that I have too many games to play. My steam library is overflowing, I have unopened games for 3DS that I brought back in 2017, and the list of retro games that I want to play is monstrous. But when I need to choose what to play I paralyzed, because I usually don’t drop games (except it is really awful) and can’t play too many at the same time. And because of that I usually found myself replaying old stuff or really simple games like tetris or some kind of puzzle. Which is actually fine but I really want to play those games I can’t choose! So, this year(I want to write it in January but well) I want to try some tactics to take over my paralysis of analysis.

I asked at Melonland Forum about it and decided on this scheme.

  1. I’ll make full list of games that I wanna play, maybe make it in categories
  2. I’ll make a wheel with 5-10 games and spin it
  3. I play the game for two hours
  4. If I like it – I play more. If not – I don’t. If I like it but don’t want to play right now – I’ll put it in a different list
  5. I change game that was picked in the wheel and spin again

I really like this plan and right now I’m on 1-st step – I need to make a list xD I still thinking about what categories should I choose. Genres? Consoles? Franchises? Also I won’t stop myself from playing games to ones I have urge to play in the moment, even it’s game I already played or wasn’t in the list (for example, right now I obsessed with Mewgenics and it’s actually a reason why I didn’t post much in february). Because it’s not a challenge, just a way to start playing different games. Maybe I’ll need for a more radical moves but I start easy.

So, what types of games do I want to play?

Franchises I always wanted to know. For example, I never play Final Fantasy but always want to try. Or Monster Hunter. Or Digimons. Or a lot of smaller franchises, franchises that I know by one-two games and want to play more.

Games I wanted to play for years. I really like the aesthetic of Zelda games. So I brought Ocarina of Time 3DS back in 2016….and never played it. I haven’t even opened a box for years. With steam it’s even worse – I had a very bad habit of buying new AAA games for their full price and never playing it. Cyberpunk, Psychonauts 2, Borderlands 3, Prey, the second South Park’s game….it’s terrible, some of them I even don’t want to play anymore and others I would able to buy for a lower price.

Random games I may enjoy. Popular and highly rated games are cool but it’s not mean that 6-7/10 games don’t deserve your attention. These are usually just games for not everyone. But what if you are that person who will love these games? For example, I accidently found Puzzle&Dragons Z on 3DS and I got a little crazy about it. I don’t know, this one just fits me too well. Anime dragons, match three, JRPG, cheap seinen vibes, all that I love! So I will always be glad to find a game that may not be perfect in general but perfect for me.

I will not document every game I play with this “challenge” but definitely will report if this play will succeed or not. Also feel free to share if you have this problem too.
